The way a particular laser works is determined by the specific wavelength of light that it produces.  The laser used at Stoneybrook Animal Hospital creates a beam of CO² (Carbon Dioxide) energy which is absorbed by the water in the tissue we are using the laser on.  Our bodies are made of 2/3 (two-thirds) water, which is vaporized by the laser energy.  There is no physical contact with the affected tissue, aside from the beam of energy itself.  By controlling the laser, the veterinarian can remove thin layers of tissue while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected.  Additionally, as the laser beam passes through the tissue it seals nerve endings, seals blood vessels, sterilizes, and kills bacteria that cause infection.
