CO2 Laser Assisted Surgery
Stoneybrook Animal
Hospital has over 7 years of experience performing CO2 laser assisted
surgery in veterinary medicine, and was among the first veterinary hospitals in Ontario
to offer CO2 laser assisted surgical procedures for pets. CO2 Laser surgery has been documented and proven as an
option for safe and comfortable treatments. It can completely replace the scalpel
blade for all standard (spays and neuters) veterinary surgical procedures, and can provide access to
a host of additional surgical procedures as well.
Our veterinarians performing laser surgery have successfully
completed certified hands-on training from the Veterinary Surgical Laser Society.

OUR LASER TECHNOLOGY here!
How does a Laser work?
The way a particular laser works is
determined by the specific wavelength of light that it produces. The laser used at Stoneybrook Animal Hospital creates a beam of CO2 (Carbon
Dioxide) energy which is absorbed by the water in the tissue we are using the
laser on. Our bodies are made of 2/3 (two-thirds) water, which is vaporized
by the laser energy. There
is no physical contact with the affected tissue, aside from the beam of energy
itself. By controlling the laser, the veterinarian can remove thin layers
of tissue while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected.
Additionally, as the laser beam passes through the tissue it
seals nerve endings, seals blood vessels, sterilizes, and kills bacteria that cause infection.
There are many articles and publications
discussing the advantages of performing CO2 laser assisted surgery.
Are Lasers New?
Lasers have been successfully used on humans for over 30 years. The human
experience is proving to be beneficial for pets and their owners.
What Types Of Procedures Can A CO2 Laser Perform?
A CO2 laser is suitable for a wide variety of surgical procedures.
It can be used for common, every day "elective" surgeries such as spays,
neuters, and declaws. Laser surgery can correct many common conditions such as cysts, tumours,
warts and infections that may occur around the eyes, ears, in the mouth and anywhere on the skin,
oral surgery, eye and eyelid surgery, lick granulomas, and the list goes on
and on.
